The legend of the thistle begins on a dark night when a Norse King and his army invaded Scotland and began a stealthy approach to where a group of Clansmen lay sleeping. So as to catch the Scots unawares they slipped off their shoes and all would have gone well but for one of the party treading upon a thistle. His cries of pain awoke the slumbering Scots and they went on to seize the day.
